The Society of American Foresters Develops Resource on Proforestation

What is Proforestation? It is preservationist movement that seeks to ban timber harvesting, logging, and active forest management, including prescribed fire and wildfire mitigation activities, on public lands - particularly in "mature forests". This movement cites a small body of research suggesting forests should be left to grow unmanaged by humans to maximize carbon sequestration.*

The Society of American Foresters (SAF) promotes science-based, sustainable management of the nation's forests. Recently major news media and industry journals have brought the issue of proforestation nationwide attention. SAF has developed a handout to educate the public on the benefits of forest management as well as the problems with proforestation.
